21 July. Lofoten Islands

The road lead us to the south along the coastline.

The boat in the bay

The bridges are not rare in Norway. The coastline is shattered with fjords and sometimes it is easier to reach the point B from point A by water, than land.

Bridge

Norwegians are like bright and clear colors. Despite the rainy climate the houses and ships are painted in red, blue, green and white. There is also salad-green and orange.

Pier

The old man have come to us on the interesting device while we were standing near the local supermarket. That was something between “Smart” and the invalid carriage. After that another same apparatus with an grandpa has moved through the parking, but that one was electrical.

Turtle on wheels

The summer time is short, so you should use it wisely.

The construction of the Norwegian House

At last we are on the ferry, which shall carry us to the Lofotens islands. That is a quite big archipelago. You need to spend many time to inspect it.

We are moving near the local garbage den (everything is surrounded by walls and it doesn’t looks like that). There is a shield, where were written the sells for utilization of the different kinds of garbage (in Norway croons). The daily garbage from the locals is utilized without paying. This is true because we saw the woman with two big boxes of trash.

Shield with the prices at the dump

Lofotens are the Norway analogy of the Krim. At summer time there is a lot of people and excursion’s buses. With some help from the locals we have found a few deserted places.

Wild rock

The microclimate here is impressive – there is growing morroshka.

North berry

The water is everywhere here thanks to the often raining events.

19-20 July. Tromso

Tromso. Northern Cathedral

After the walking trip through the Soroja our way were leading to the Tromso. This small city is famous because of its many historical expeditions.
According to the raid rules, every crew is writing a little report with the previously chosen title connected to Scandinavia. The final version of it you can see here.

We were driving all night long and on the porch of the Tromso were no free place for camping – the July is a pretty hot tourist season. The temperature of the air is +13 and there is a raining. According to map we have found the appropriate hotel. We were parking near it but the administration has shown up only at 8 a.m. That was only 6 a.m. so we’ve decided to sleep a little. We were woken up by the bumping into our window. That was a determined woman (pretty and young) in the police uniform. She was curious why we were sleeping at the forbidden place. We have explained. We haven’t been penalized for the 10000 kilometers from Scandinavia, and that was the first (and last) contact with police. We have even intersected with military forces in the Finland, while occasionally have reached the borderlands.
So it is the geophysical observatory near the Ramfjordmoena on the 30 kilometers on the North from Tromso.

Atmospheric radar

According to the year period the scientists were few in numbers, but they have met us very fine.

Phased array

They have told us what are they doing (sometimes this eggheads are warm the high layers of the atmosphere to few million degrees), shown us the antennas and the other instruments of station, which they were using for looking on the north lights. The lab is specially located surrounded by layers of the land to avoid the negative influence on the contacting devises. It is also stand near the powerful electro station.

Antenna field

After this we have gone back to the Tromso. One of the most prominent memorials of the city is a cathedral church. It is the most northern in Scandinavia.

A large stained glass window in the Arctic Cathedral

There are not many old buildings have remain because of the wooden structure and the blazes, which have been destroyed the city periodically.

The ones what have survived is in good state. That was the city during our walking time.

Our next meeting with Norwegian scientists had happened during our visit of the Metrological Institute. The hall of this knowledge temple is decorated with fresco of the Odin with the hammer in hand, while driving the chariot in city sky.

Near the entrance there is a white polar bear, whose meet the gests.

Tromso is the of of the most interesting cities we have visited in that raid. It is special. There are dug tunnels in the mountain, where the parking zone is. This is entire underground hamlet with the first underground circle movement part.
On the net day we have proceeded forward and during it we have visited the pretty roadside saams’s caf?. You can drink coffee, which was cooked in burned kettle on fire and eat the cup of the deer’s meat soup.

17-18 July. Trip to the Soroya Island

At that day we have abandoned the graceful island Majeroja. We were looking at the beautiful isles with fishing buildings. One of this island-on-island are connected to great land with the ajuric bridge.

Island on the island

The bridges and ferries are the visit card of the Scandinavia. If the bay or lake is small they put the bridge through it. If it isn’t fair, they build the ferry.

Bay Bridge

The roads were made in rock and there are also a lot of tunnels. The Majeroja connected to the mainland with the underwater channel, which is going above to the sea level on 212 miters.

Cliff over road

The weather was so good, that I can’t believe we were far behind the 70 u parallel in the real Overpolarity.

The road along the bay

Typical Norwegian road

With the perfect Norwegian road we have reached the Hammerfest – the city which is famous of its polar lights. It is also very comfy and graceful. Locals told us that at winter this city is also awesome and interesting, like at the summer. Except the musical festival the symbol of the Hammerfest is the white bear.

Polar bear – the symbol of Hammerfest

On the first gas station we have encountered the northern deer. Looks like he want some fuel for himself.

Deer and cars

From the Hammerfest our route leads to Soroja – the gigantic island, most part of which is reservation. Tourists don’t like this place, like Lofoten. The cutter is floating to Soroja – the catamaran on the underwater wings.

Water tram

The road didn’t take a more than 20 minutes. That gives islanders an opportunity. Their scholars are driving to the eldest classes from the mainland.

Full speed ahead

The velocity of the cutter is amazing. There are lush surf and numberless colorful hairs of the passengers.

This is not a torpedo attack

Another Carrier

We have reached the little town which population is only few decades of locals.

Fire crew

First, we have accommodated in the local school. It is equipped with swimming pool (!!!), not bad library and during the holidays is used as hostel.

The town is on the edge of the land

The weather comes at hand, but the locals told us that it will be the rain afternoon. Norwegians are the most competent meteorologists in the world.

Way to the northern cape

Our route were lying on the northern edge of the island to the high tower made of plate stones. It was built by locals in the 1855.

Northern cape

While moving we were drinking the streams water (the another one benefit of the Norway before Africa).

Relaxation at the stream

After three hours we have climbed on the top.

Tower – Landmark

After going a little down we have found the comfortable basin, which were looking directly on the northern evening sun.

Tent on a cliff

Close to midnight the sun have set pretty low above the sea, but didn’t do it completely.

Midnight Sun

At night there were vagabonding sheeps, who were unable to reach their favorite place because of our intrusion.

The hill and the tower

At morning we have proceed through the deserted island.

Next on the route

The entire length of our route is nearby 20 kilometers, which is covered with unbelievably scenic places.

The bay and sandy beach with streams

Bay and views of the islands

Sometimes we were accompanied with sheeps, who helps us with especially steep going down.

Sheep Squad conductors

We have moved along the long tight sandy bay with the big amount of seagulls. They were not too glad to see us. You should move through the sand without stops, because it is wet with water and continuously going down.

Sandy Bay and the dune

On the left side of the bay was the high mountain, which I would like to call the dune. Because it is have the sandy slope. The wild deers are moving along the steep slope, lay down the chain footprints on the ground.

16 July. Mageroya

This day was the most saturated. Let’s continue the journey.

Port

At the morning we were moving through Mageroja using the weather, which was unimaginably good for such places. We have visited little towns, ports and fishing hamlets. In life painting the Norse are same esthetics as Fins, but more tough climate and mountains instead of taiga are make their footprint.

Steps decorated with round stones

The next part of the day was used for the trip on the most Northern point of the Europe. It is located on the cape with long name Knivskjelodden (71градус, 11’08” n.a). The walking path that 18 kilometers long starts from the gravel parking, on which we were unable to park all of our vehicles. In the end we were forced to place Prius on the bare rocks.

Extreme parking over sharp stones

At 16:00 the group have moved farther. The route appears as very rocky one. Periodically we should have overcome the little swamps. The tough walking cross-shoes were very handy. We were very lucky not to receive any injuries.

Movement along the trail with the guidelines in the form of stone pyramids

On the path we have met many times the islands of green grass and soft-purple little flowers – the marks of the tough polar summer.

Flowers on the rocks

The route was moving like the maze all over the rocky breakages and steep cliffs. At the end it leads us to the sea.

Stream

White marble outcrops

Colorful stone in the form of a pterodactyl head

Stone pyramid

Layered rocks

Reflection of the sky in the lake on the Cape. Right – North Cape

We have finally overcome the wet rocks, cracks in the mountains and rockfalls. Soon we realize that on the most northern part of the Europe is standing the automatic baken with solar battery. It’s definitely didn’t work at polar night.

The northernmost beacon of Europe

The waves of the emerald color were falling at the rocks and stand up with fountain of splatters.

Beach and waves

Sea waves and beating against the shore

Water is everywhere. A lot of salt water in sea and the streams with clear babbling water are making their way between the stones.

Stream

The road back to the start of the walking path had required some efforts.

16 July. On the place. North Cape

The day of 16-th July started at the evening of previous one. Every crew was gathered in one place. The column starts moving to Nord-Cape – the destination of our journey. Three cars are following us. We need to overcome twenty kilometers to reach the point.

RearguardTwenty more crews are moving forward. In the far left we can see the cape. We have planned the walking trip to it.

Column tightened

At last we can see the inscription in Norwegian: “NordKapp”. This is the departure to the territory of the tourist complex. It stands at the height of 300 miters according to the level of the see on the high mountain with the steep coast. This is the midnight, but it still shiny, because of different polar circle.

Cherished plate

There are a lot of people at the square, whom I would call “the northern pilgrims”. People are made the hedge to the northern part of the Europe on the buses, cars, motorcycles and even on bicycles. The mixing of the people remind me the Babylon. We have met the motorcycle team from Italy (they are got two girls), Germans, Japanese (all along) and Sweden.

Prius reached!

We are making the circle of honor over the monumental globe and stops near in the raw of other crews.

Oksana and Antoinette

The Champagne, which was prepared earlier, was poured into the glasses and everybody is drinking. The temperature is 8 Celsius, the wind is piercing, and honestly we want something warming.

Tourist complex at the top of the North Cape

From the top of the cliff you can see the other capes. The far left one is going into the sea a little bit more northern, than the one we are standing on. But it don’t have appropriate square for tourists and car’s parking :). Tomorrow we shall go there by our legs.

Northern capes

By the sayings of the witnesses we were very lucky with the weather. We have seen the sea downside. Most of the time the peak is covered with fog. Somewhere in the midnight the cover of clouds has been torn apart for a minute. The sun, which never set at this time of the year, has finally showed up.

Near signs indicating the geographical coordinates of the place

We have made some shots under the globe – this is the unquestionable ritual for all gests. A lot of people are photographing with their country’s flag.

Photo for memory

There is the Philips team – his family and support in the raid.

Organizers team

There are our main rivals in photographing.

Julien and Andrian

The comfy camping has taken us after the Nord-Cape.

Norwegian camping

We could take a little rest. At the morning we’ve got the raid through the Mageroja island. As we were informed, the Russian scientists have delivered far-southern crabs to the Murmansk. There have breed and multiply all around the Norway coast. When the scientists are yelling on each other about the consequences of that, locals are already chasing the crabs. Also that is done for the tourist enjoyment.

Boy with crab

The second valuable attribute of the Norway lifestyle is the cod. People are drying it all over the place.

Cod

The real mystery is why the seagulls didn’t stall it. The insects feel bad at this temperature, so there are just nothing of them.

Older vehicles – passion Norwegians

We have visited a few comfortable towns on the Mageroja. Deers are browsing near the roadside, but there are very few of them in the Nord-Cape region. There is a big plateau and it is not necessary to run on the road.

Shedding deers

There are very beautiful bay, especially when the sun is shining and the sky is blue. Such weather here is extremely rare – only 3-5 days per year.

The bay

There are no trees on the plateau.

Short stopoverThere are not a lot of human signs, but the roads are perfect.

Lake and river

The houses are very scenic. The water in the bay is green as in every Norway.

15 July. Norway. Hemningberg

The raid is continuing. We have passed the borderland of the Norway this morning, and everything around has entirely changed. Even in July this place is cold one. Instead of forestry highlands and blue lakes we saw a green water of the fjords with orange benches during reflux. And there are a lot of mountains. They are scenic and have a lot of water streams.

Road to Hemningberg. Edge of the Europe

Our way was leading through the coast because of the very curvy relief. The web of the Norway automobile routes is not too thick. It is really hard to get lost. Some regions got a very thin one-line roads with a pocket-ways. If two cars meet each other, one of them can drive on the roadside. The pointing as always in Scandinavia is the best. You can meet not only dears, but also the herds of sheeps. They are very curious and not afraid of people. Usually, everything got the marking.

Sheep on the road

The grey rock of local scenic mountains usually covered with moss.

The abstract image of lichen

There are no trees, only the bushes which can be used as a fuel. The sun is almost didn’t set because it is a middle of July. The North polar circle we have pierced in the region of the airport Rovaniam, far away on the south from this place. Also there is Santa somewhere.

Barents Sea coast near Hemningberg.

The strong cold wind is blowing and your respect towards locals starts to grow.

Rocky ledges

The road was made in the wild mountains, which are mostly vertically run high on the coast.

Prius on the road in rocks

Our ending point for today is the small hamlet Hemninberg on the west outskirts of Norway. Farther lays only the Russia. There are not many houses in the village, neither locals, but there is a camping and the capital toilet, which our colleges were searching on the cars at morning.

Small houses under the earthen roof. Hemningberg

Sometimes the sun is come from the clouds and you can see the brightness of local houses. Instead of Finland and, of course, the Sweden, Norway buildings are painted in colors. Sometimes you can meet the traditional red ones. In local cafes is normal to hang the old black-white photos.

Brown coastal strip. Konigsberg House.

We can’t stand a chance and made a traditional photo with the lifebuoy on the piers.

Red lifebuoy

You can see the webs on the drying place.

Рыболовецкие сети

The blue sky is very close behind the gloomy storm clouds – this windy conveyor of Gulfstream.

Sandbank

The green of bushes is trying to move through the stones. There is enough water, no powerful frosts, but the warm and light is not to many.

Stream among stones

The nature around is impressively beautiful. Humans are also looks pretty quiet and harmonically.

Boat in a sunbeam

After the Hemningberg we will have to made another crossing to the North on the Mageroja island.

14 July. Finland. Further to the North

The night camping was organized in the middle of the forest and the circle cut of ground. The cars and tents were located by circle. The morning was gloomy and rainy. After a little exchange of opinions with our dog-companion we pick up tent, blow away the mosquitoes and start drinking tea. We were waiting till the traffic congestion ends.

Then the weather has become better and the rain was over. That is how locals drying deer’s leaser.

13 July. Finland

I should accent that Finns take a holidays in their own country pretty often. They consider their nature as the most beautiful in this corner of the galaxy (what is almost right).

Lake with clear water

That kind of powerful beautiful north deer we have met on the road. Also take a look at the quality of the pointing and road-cover of the Finnish suburb.

Deer on the road

We were drove near the hydro-node on the river with that kind of the waterfall. As Finland is standing in the zone of Gulfstream activity there is no problem with precipitates. The rivers , streams and waterfalls are widespread in here.

Spillway

Our crew is at the roadside of the gravel route in the forest. In day we were usually made up 450 to 700 kilometers depending on the difficulty of the path and state of the road.

Gravel roadWe have seen this woman in the mosquito suit, who is walking with her dog. Dog didn ’t wear such cloth. There is a bad situation with mosquitoes in Finland. There are a lot of them when temperature is rise up 20 degrees. Like today.

Walking with dog

Sometimes we are moving like column with clouds of dust, but usually we are choosing places for shots and relax by ourselves.

On the march

On the timeout in Finnish camping I have made this photo, which have conquered hearts of the judges on the First Grand Jury in Kuusamo. It is easy to make such photos in the Finland at the summertime. In that day the sunset was four hours long! We are close to the polar circle!

Boat on the water – best picture

We have met the young couple in the reserve. They are the tourists from Prague.
They were also very kind to posing for our shots .

Who would have thought that this is not the Finns?

As it comes, we realize that knowing of a little English will help you to interact with locals. We are correcting the path with the local (second on the left). He has revealed himself as the Helsinki liver and the owner of the outskirt house in this region. Together we have describe the last number of the capital newspaper. It’s a shame that material about the raid shows up only on the next day.

12 July. Trip through the natural reserve

We are continuing our straight movement on the north through Finland. In
that day we have visited the reserve through which territory most of routes are going. We have chosen the twelve kilometers long road.

Boats for rafting and canoeing rentals

There is the firm near the reserve entrance, which rent the equipment for the water
tourism. Even for the extreme one. The entrance to the reserve is priceless. The path we’ve chosen is a good marking road with wooden stairs and bridges.

Wooden walkways through the swamp

We are still crossing the river and numerous stormy streams. It looks like the most
part of the path was made right before we came. The cleanness is unbelievable.

Pendant bridge

We were accompanied with not big, but precise cloud of mosquitoes. This frog-queen
is hunting them for sure.

Frog in the needles

The water is follows us everywhere. Even from the upside.

Stream

The river, which we were forcing sometimes create such scenic mountain islands with gro
wing pines on them.

Islet on the River

Sometimes you will meet the yelling waterfalls.

Waterfall and stones

This watermill is looks pretty beautiful.

Old water mill

In some especially scenic places (they are marked with symbol of the miradore – beautiful view) I have seen the shields with description of the specific place of the route.
There is even a pierced hole for the lazy tourists – you can look and photographing from
the best point.

11 July. Silent people

The next day had started from funny village, which was decorated like the Formula 1 car. And it was also put on the high pile. There are water space, motorboats and fishing boats.

Following the plan we should visit interesting modern-art object, placed on the roadside of “route 5”. This installation is also called “Silent nation”. There are several hundreds of wooden graves with heads made of turf pieces with protruded grass. Which is also wearing cloth. That symbolize the spirit of the Finnish nation, which no matter what overcome and save his identity.

The installation was made by Finnish dancer, painter and choreograph Rejo Kella. The locals each year change the clothes which damaged by sun and wind. Mostly second-hand, but sometimes it is a new cloth with stickers.

The impression from this place was very strong. It fills like you definitely appeared in surroundings of wiggling people, who trying to tell you something. There are a lot of different people – children, adults, men and women.

People came here, and young too. Even slightly smoked teenagers are very quiet and modest.

Moving farther while looking on the red-moss-covered rocks, which are lying on the roadside.

It is pleasant to driving through the winding gravel route. It is lined with innocent forest, which contact with places of tundra.

Forest road

We have encountered the half-destroyed bridge, which was too unstable for forcing. Later the Range Rover from our caravan decided to overcome the river, but stuck and needed some help from Alan’s Defender. It is good, that receiver is working properly.

Мост

Impenetrable bridge

On the edge of the forest and swamp we have met the half-mythical creatures – the north deers. Reindeers, how most of people call them, are very adorable and behave like cows in the India. That had slowed us down a lot.

But if the view is good you can smash the gas button and moving forward to new adventures!
